Viola looked amazing last night. It bothered me how some articles were calling her “brave”. It’s pretty fucked up how white people, and black people alike, think you’re brave for rocking your natural hair. It shouldn’t have to be like that, it should be a normal thing to wear your hair the way you want too. But atlas Viola is coined as being “brave” for being herself.

I completely get this issue that a lot of people are having- but a quick reminder, it seems like Viola did wear her hair natural as a political statement. She has recently been talking about how she feels pressured into wearing wigs because of Hollywood, and she would like to leave her hair natural but is intimidated to do so.

I totally understand the politics surrounding. She’s in Hollywood and image is everything. Most black women have to wear wigs in that business. If she’s wearing her natural as a political statement, than I guess it would make sense why she’s being called brave. Like I get why it’s intimidating in not only that industry, but anything you do…I’m currently dealing with the same problem. I’m brave because I decided to wear my hair in the fro. It shouldn’t be that way, but I understand that is how the culture works right now.
I find all of this interesting and I’m doing my senior project on it…women of color and their hair, and the politics surrounding it…if you like it or not.
